HOW TO GET TO LONGBOAT KEY
Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) serves as the local airport for the Bradenton Area. With SRQ’s convenient location, onsite access to rental cars, and over 50 nonstop flights, you can have your toes in the sand by lunchtime.
The Bradenton Area is also conveniently located just a 45-minute drive from Tampa International Airport (TPA) and a 2 hour drive from Orlando Airport, both airport offer non stop flights from the UK.
GETTING AROUND
By car - One of the ways to get around town is with your car or a rental. It gives you the freedom to set your own schedule, go with the flow, and even carpool with friends or other members of your group.
Public transportation - Public transportation networks are established, but they are limited by route and frequency. Anna Maria Island has its own free public trolley transport system, providing transportation from the north to the south end of the island every 20-30 minutes. Manatee County Area Transit (MCAT) provides transportation throughout the larger Bradenton Area. For service from Coquina Beach to Longboat Key, reservations are required in advance.
By ferry - Getting to and from the mainland to Anna Maria Island is easier than ever with the Gulf Islands Ferry! The ferry connects Downtown Bradenton with the idyllic charm of AMI City Pier on Anna Maria Island and Historic Bridge Pier on Bradenton Beach. With the longest trip taking approximately 50 minutes, you can enjoy a scenic, traffic-free commute or a leisurely day trip. Once on Anna Maria Island, hop on the Island Trolley to explore the Bradenton Area’s best-loved beaches, shops and dining spots all for as little as $10 per adults and $6 for children 4-18 roundtrip.
Alternatively, go “green” and explore the natural beauty of the area by foot, bike, scooter, segway or electric golf cart. Although the range will be limited, they are great to explore the area more thoroughly. There are several rental locations around.
LONGBOAT KEY
The Beaches
Longboat Key is blessed with 11 miles of pristine, powder soft sands and calm, aquamarine waters surrounding it. The island is the epitome of natural beauty and a great way to spend a beach day with the family or just relax on your own. Favourite beaches are Whitney Beach, known for its reclusive setting and its prestigious “Blue Wave Certification” from the Clean Beaches Coalition, and Beer Can (Greer) Island, which is best accessible by boat and a great place for a family picnic!
The Accommodations
The island is less built out than its surrounding neighbours but still offers a variety of accommodation offerings to suit anyone’s needs. Many of the area rental agencies offer large private homes or cute cottages right on the beach. There’s plenty of quaint “old Florida” hotels like the Sea Grape Inn and White Sands of Longboat Key. If you’re looking for luxury, Zota Beach Resort is a beach-front property that will leave you feeling extra fancy.
The Nature
While Longboat Key has some of the finest beaches in the world, there’s even more outdoors to explore on the barrier island. Longboat Key is the home of Joan M. Durante Community Park, a protected wetland and walking/biking path where you’re sure to spot various birds, jumping fish, crabs, and more. It’s also worth renting a kayak as Joan M. Durante Park offers calm waters, mangrove tunnels, and natural plant species that make for a pleasant paddling adventure. This hidden gem also sports a playground and bathroom facilities, so it’s easy to spend the day here and get back to nature.
The Dining
No vacation is complete without indulging in some of the finest food that the destination has to offer. The romantic and highly renowned Euphemia Haye offers fine dining featuring fantastic European-inspired dishes. The restaurant also features a more casual experience upstairs at The Haye Loft, which includes a delectable dessert bar. For a more casual experience, the waterfront Mar Vista features the freshest Florida seafood in a relaxed indoor/outdoor setting. The restaurant resides on Sarasota Bay and is also accessible by boat.
